Insidious - a poem
A grain of sand,
gritting underneath my skin.
But I am no oyster and I make no pearl,
so the infinitesimal granule wormed its way in.
A secret lay inside my heart,
trapped for none to see.
Erupting against its confines,
bursting at the seams.
One ripple to change the world,
hewn from a pebble just as small.
None know what it will bring,
its effects unknown to all.
The sand remains in my body,
lacquering a shell of venom.
Each layer a reminder,
of the ugly I want to stay mum.
The world wants to harvest my pearl,
without knowing what it brings.
I don’t want to let it go,
though one small motion, and free it will ring.
Poisoning the air,
seeping into bones.
Such a deadly secret,
ensures the bearer is alone.
